Heritage Open Days is a long weekend (September 8 - 11) of free access to interesting properties that are either not usually open, or would normally charge an entrance fee.
In the past, come the weekend itself, this website has been a vicitm of its own success as thousands try to log on to access the hundreds of homes, churches, heritage sites and other interesting places opening their doors for free.
Things have improved since then but it's still a good idea to have a thorough browse now before a lot of the bookable events get snapped up.
