India on the Move, National Railway Museum, April 4 - September 7
‘Have I Got News For You’ team captain Ian Hislop steamed into the National Railway Museum to help launch their latest exhibition, ‘India on the Move.’
The fascinating exhibition uses a combination of images and video clips to explore how India’s vast railway network acts as a lifeline to the country and takes a look at the people that keep it all going.
The exhibition explores the human interest stories behind the the people featured in award-winning BBC documentary-maker Gerry Troyna’s ‘Bombay Railway’ and ‘Monsoon’ Railway films.
“I have a great fascination in railways and the impact they have on people’s lives. I recently presented a programme on BBC 4 about the Beeching report which fired up my already sizeable interest even more,” says Hislop.
“I’m a huge fan of Gerry’s work as well, so this new exhibition is a rather amazing combination of a number of things I’m pretty keen on!”

The exhibition also profiles some of the hawkers and street-children who forge a living on India’s trains and stations.
As part of the exhibition you will get to know Lavinga, who sells her wares on Mumbai’s busy urban rail network, and Shankar, a street child who scratched a living for two years on Thane railway station before being rescued by a children’s charity.

NRM Director Andrew Scott says: “As you would expect with any exhibition at the National Railway Museum, ‘India on the Move’ has strong railway links, but it is the human interest angle that’s the real secret of its appeal.
“Using a groundbreaking combination of photography and film clips creates a not-to-be-missed experience of life on India’s railways and we’re glad Ian joined us to enjoy it.”
