The 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, described as an “excellent example” of the engineering and aesthetic innovations made by Chrysler in the late 1980s, will be a key attraction in the north window of the towering museum when it opens later this year.
“I could have done with that old war horse last month,” said Coltrane, who has fronted a high-profile campaign to raise £5 million in public donations to complete the museum.
“Nothing was getting up my hill, but she could go up solid ice.”
Experts at the nearby Museum of Transport have already carried out conservation work on the Jeep, adding a thorough waxing as a final touch.

“We are delighted to have been given this vehicle by Robbie Coltrane,” said Gavin McLellan, the Director of the Riverside Museum Appeal.
“He has been a fantastic friend to Glasgow Museums for many years, and because of his passion for cars and engineering he was an early recruit to the appeal.
“Now that the appeal has reached 80 per cent of its £5 million target, and with opening day a matter of months away, we want as many people as possible to show their support and donate to the appeal.”
