A 10-ton replica of the world's first mechanically-propelled submarine has returned to the U-Boat Story exhibition at Liverpool's Woodside Ferry Terminal.

Resurgam underwent major repairs by experts at nearby Birkenhead's Maritime and Engineering College in a refurbishment scheme aimed at restoring the look of the 1879 original, which was discovered on the seabed in 1995 and is now a protected wreck.

The menacing mock-up will now stand alongside U-534, the torpedoed German submarine at the £5 million attraction.

"She's looking as good as new and I know she'll prove to be a popular addition to the U-Boat Story," said Neil Scales, Chief Executive of Merseytravel.

"We've also repositioned Resurgam so she is now displayed more prominently for visitors."
