Belfast City Hall announces two-month events programme to mark centenary of Titanic launch

Almost a century ago, the foundations of the RHS Titanic were assembled at the shipbuilding powerhouse of Harland and Wolff in Belfast.

To mark the 100th anniversary of its most ill-fated departee, officials in the Northern Irish capital have announced a two-month roster of exhibitions, talks, plays and commemorative events, the Titanic 100 programme, culminating on the centenary of the ship’s launch on May 31 2011.

The exhibition will be based on a major exhibition on the lawns of the City Hall, featuring pictures by RJ Welch, the official photographer for Harland and Wolff who captured the ship’s transition from plan to completion.

A further display inside the hall will focus on the SS Nomadic, a sister ship to the Titanic’s voyage which featured in the blockbuster film, and put artefacts from parent shipbuilding company White Star Line on public display.

A four-day festival will also take place during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.
