The importance of Norwich’s heritage has been recognised by English Heritage today, in their pledge to give St John’s Roman Catholic Cathedral £72, 000 funding.
Across England, the final year of English Heritage’s joint cathedral grants scheme with the Wolfson Foundation sees £2.6 million awarded for the repair of 23 cathedrals.
St John’s lies at the heart of the medieval city and is a member of Norwich 12, the UKs finest collection of individually outstanding heritage buildings. The Cathedral has been judged one of the finest examples of Victorian Gothic Architecture in England. The £72,000 grant will be used towards a roof re-leading project that will cost £179,000.
Revd James Walsh, Dean of Norwich Roman Catholic Cathedral, said: "This timely grant enables us to complete the final stage of a three-part programme of re-leading the roof of our cathedral. Without it the work could not be done. I am most grateful to the Cathedral Grants Scheme for making it possible."
Other cathedrals in the East of England to receive funding are Ely and Peterborough. Ely’s £43,000 will help to buy a £100,000 replacement fire detection system. Peterborough’s £39,000 part-funds an estimated £96,000 repair project for its West Front.
"Cathedrals are some of our country's most imposing and beautiful buildings,” said Greg Luton, Regional Director of English Heritage. “The excellent craftsmanship demonstrated in these places of worship is something which we must strive to preserve for generations to come. The grants announced today will go some way to helping the custodians of these buildings in this task."
