DIY ethos of Coracle Publishing inspires Print It call to arms at Site Gallery in Sheffield

Exhibition: Print It, Site Gallery, Sheffield, until September 8 2012

For the past 35 years or so, Coracle Publications has made a habit of producing books, critical works, ephemera and more on all things art.

In this exhibition, the pioneering efforts of the group between 1989 and 2012 – when poet, artist and curator Simon Cutts and artist and writer Erica Van Horn worked with binder Stuart Settle and Norfolk printer Crome and Akers – are both celebrated and positioned as an inspirational starting point.

Copy, an alliance of Yorkshire artists-turned-publishers, will be responding with an “explorative residency”, called Papers, Fictions, Scripts and Circle. Book swaps, public workshops and new works will be created within the gallery, leaving the distinct impression that DIY publishing could be the future at a critical time in the history of creative literature.

A pop-up bookshop featuring international publishers also adorns the contemporary space.

Norwich University College of the Arts, North Yorkshire’s Shandy Hall and the Southbank Centre’s Saison Poetry Library are partners in the Arts Council-backed touring display.
