Brighton’s Jubilee Library is inviting members of the public to bring in their old and unusual books to be examined by an expert.
The Rare Books Roadshow runs on March 2 2006 and is part of a programme to celebrate the acclaimed library’s first birthday. Alan Shelley, Vice-President of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association, will be on hand to offer assessments and evaluations of individual books.
Mr Shelley said: “Working with Brighton and Hove City Library Service is particularly pleasing since I carried out the extensive evaluation of the renowned rare books collection before their removal to the splendid new premises in Jubilee Library.”
“On the anniversary of the new library’s opening…I very much look forward to evaluating and sharing knowledge about those special books to be brought in by local residents,” he added.
Mr Shelley has run Bow Windows Bookshop in Lewes, East Sussex, for more than 20 years.
The event will be held in the Rare Books Reading Room at Jubilee Library. Visitors can book an assessment in advance by calling 01273 294071 or can go to the drop-in session from 2.30 to 7.30pm.
