Entries have opened for the tightened UK shortlist of potential World Heritage Sites, giving attractions across the country until June to state their case for joining the likes of the Statute of Liberty and Stonehenge among the world’s most revered and protected landmarks.

The shortened candidature aims to add to the 28 current domestic Sites by putting forward proposals which are "far more likely to succeed", judged by an independent advisory panel to the deciding Ministers from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

"I am looking forward to seeing a new generation of sites take their place alongside some of the world’s most iconic World Heritage Sites, such as Stonehenge, the Taj Mahal (above) and the Great Wall of China," announced Culture Minister Margaret Hodge.

"This is a new and exciting opportunity to think about what we can offer to the world with places of outstanding universal value that will help showcase the very best of the UK."

The application pack is available from the DCMS website. The closing date is June 11 2010, and a final decision is expected in early 2011.
