John Sergeant presents Chris Bailey and Alexandra Ball of Restoration of Stourport-on-Severn Canal Basins with their National Lottery Award for Best Heritage Project. National Lottery Awards
The Stourport-on-Severn canal basins project beat off hundreds of projects to claim £2,000 and the title of Best Heritage project at The National Lottery Awards 2009.
The project has transformed the area into a major community resource and tourist attraction by enabling the restoration of canal structures and the landscaping of public areas. It has also played a pivotal role in developing the UK's canal transport system.
Programme Manager Chris Bailey, who accepted the award, said: "Our Lottery funding has been vital to this extensive restoration project, which has truly made a huge difference to the local area and the community, giving Stourport a new lease of life."
The awards also recognised the achievements of runners-up Brockwell Lido, recently saved from closure and demolition, and The International Slavery Museum, the first and only national museum dedicated to telling the story of the slave trade.
BBC Broadcaster and infamous Strictly Come Dancing contestant John Sergeant presented the Best Heritage Project category. "I wish each of the projects all the best for the future in their good work, which is having such a positive impact on so many people," he said.
