A German landscape firm has been chosen to dramatically redesign the look of the Imperial War Museum North after winning the nod from visitors and key backers in an international competition.
Berlin-based Topotek 1 will use camouflage patterns to create a "collage of dignified spaces" around the Manchester site, including a new quayside walkway, a landscaped garden with raised views of the Museum, a water sculpture and a multisensory children's play area.

IWM North Director Jim Forrester said the plans aimed to make the outside areas as "striking, memorable and rewarding" as the existing Libeskind building, formed in the shape of a globe shattered by conflict. "With the next phase of the Quays regeneration underway, we are ready to make more of its setting," he explained, having chosen the winners from more than 50 architects.

"The selection panel felt that Topotek 1 had come up with a great initial concept and were ready to adapt their imaginative ideas to suit the fast-changing environment around the museum. We are very confident that we can work with them to arrive at an excellent scheme which will enhance the whole Quays' experience."

Director Jim Forrester said the partnership would create "an excellent scheme" around the eye-catching Libeskind building (above)
Zones of contemplation, creativity and play feature in the brief, as well as themes of stone, fields, water and forest, chosen for their representation of the British landscape.
Fundraising and sponsorship negotiations will now begin for the imposing new development, with the first phase scheduled for completion in 2011.
