Exhibition: Lindow Moss - A Place of Finding, The Manchester Museum, Manchester, until July 12, 2009
The Cheshire bog where the body of an Iron Age man was discovered is being revisited in a new photographic exhibition at The Manchester Museum.
Stephen Vaughan documented the landscape of Lindow Moss, which became a place of legend after a preserved body known as Lindow Man was discovered in the moss in 1984, over a four-year period.

“For me, the vivid representation of the place of finding is vital in order to connect the body to its original resting place,” says Vaughan, whose pictures highlight the erosion intensive excavation work has caused to the peat track, shrinking the site to a tenth of its original 1,500-acre size.

“My photographs aim to provide a definitive and rich record of the landscape of Lindow Man’s deposit and discovery.”
Vaughan’s work comes as part of the museum’s Lindow Man: A Bog Body Mystery exhibition, which is eight months into a year-long display at the museum and has just been nominated for a prestigious design award.

The exhibition has been shortlisted in the Temporary Exhibition Design category in the 2009 Design Week awards for its presentation of the body, which has been preserved through freeze drying and is on loan from the British Museum, and exploration of the views of scientists, archaeologists, academic figures and local people.
