The Yorkshire Film Archive, a charity intent on spotting and protecting films made about the county, have some enviable footage to choose from – egg collectors in Flamborough (known as “climmers”) and the final journey of a Whitby-bound train service, in 1965, are among the films being screened by the group in two afternoon specials for Heritage Open Days.
Having a Wonderful Time!, a promotional film commissioned by tourism enterprisers at the Scarborough Corporation in 1960, sounds certain to hit an uplifting note.
“The films will show changes through the decades,” says Sue Howard, the Director of the Archive.
“We have footage of a military camp at Scarborough just after the First World War, holiday films and the less obvious workings of the Waddington’s Piano Factory.
“We'll also include A Sentimental Journey by Frank Dean – footage of the last ever journey on the Scarborough to Whitby railway line after the Beeching cuts of the 1960s.”
Local skiffle legend Danny Wilde – “skiffle was his bag and Lonnie Donegan his God,” advises one fan page – is one of the popular performers putting in an appearance.
- Screenings at 3pm and 5.30pm. Tickets limited, call 01723 374753 (10am-5pm) to book. Visit www.yorkshirefilmarchive.com for more on the Archive. See our Top Picks for Heritage Open Days 2012 for more on the festival.
