Sir John Soane’s Museum in London has launched a Young Architects’ Club, and is looking for imaginative children aged between seven and 13 to become its inaugural members.
The monthly club will have its first meeting at the Lincoln’s Inn Fields museum on November 3 2007. Club activities will explore the art, design and science aspects of architecture with fun experiments and hands-on creative sessions, looking at types of architecture from primitive huts to classical structures.
It aims to inspire a new generation of potential architects and enable the museum to reach out to a new audience. It’s part of a raft of new educational activities for both children and adults that will be made possible by the museum’s imminent expansion into the restored Number 14, Lincoln’s Inn Fields.

“Above all we want the Young Architects’ Club to be fun,” said Museum Education Manager Bethany Kingston. “Everyone who comes along will have the chance to get involved with a wide range of activities from exploring the local landscape to creating and decorating their own buildings.”
“We also hope they will be excited by the museum itself, a wonderful building crammed with models and mysterious objects designed to fascinate and inspire.”
The club’s first project will be to explore how building design has evolved through the ages and how buildings 'speak' through decoration. Members will go on to explore places in their local area and ultimately design their own shelter.
Sir John Soane (1753-1837) was an English architect, best known for designing the Bank of England, who turned his home in Lincoln’s Inn Fields into a showcase for architecture and his collection of antiquities.
The club will run on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm. To find out more or to register for the club contact Bethany Kingston on 0207 440 4254 or email bkingston@soane.org.uk.
