Exhibition preview: Richard III: Leicester's Search for a King, Guildhall, Leicester, until February 2014
So it’s no surprise that an exhibition on his life, death and burial – including new evidence from scientists, historians and archaeologists, plus an exact recreation of his battle-scarred skull based on the details of the original scan made by the University of Leicester – has been attracting record visitor numbers to the medieval Guildhall.
More than 1,000 people a day popped in during the first week. “There has been an enormous amount of interest,” says Peter Soulsby, the Leicester City Mayor.
“This exhibition tells the whole story of the discovery, the analysis and the identification of these remains. It also tells us an awful lot about medieval Leicester, and the city as King Richard would have known it.
“Although it is a temporary exhibition, we will ensure it remains open for a long time yet.”
A permanent exhibition on the King and his times is expected to open at a former school next to the grave site in early 2014.
Until then, a touch-screen skeleton illustrates the gory details, with finds and evidence symbolising the rediscovered ruler's final days.
