Excellent access for all: the main site is on one level with well-paved areas outside, and toilets for visitors with disabilities.

On the site of a former colliery, the museum displays a rich collection of historic objects telling the story of transport, mining and quarrying, engineering and the fashion industry. Other attractions include: * Guided tours of the historic colliery buildings; * Train rides along the recently-restored colliery railway; * Outdoor science and water playgrounds; * A sculpture trail; * A nature reserve and fishing ponds

Taking The Plunge

Showcasing the history of men's and women's swimwear, the displays will chart the development of swimwear from the health promoting properties of sea bathing in the 1890s, to examining the changing attitudes of sun bathing in the 1920s, through to the booming swimwear industry created by the affordable package holidays that began in the 1960s and 1970s. It will also explore the fabric technologies that have helped to create modern swimwear used by both amateur and competitive swimmers. Normal opening hours.
