Play & Display

Play & Display: Paper & Card Toys

  • 21 January — 22 April 2017

Paper and card toys have been commercially produced from the late 1700s and all kinds of affordable yet delightful toys have been produced since then. Shortages of metal and wood during the Second World War led to a revival in the popularity of paper and card toys. Today, templates can be easily downloaded from the internet.

Examples of toys on display include paper dolls, model theatres, puppets, panoramas and cut-out books. They date from the 1880s to the 1960s and reveal how paper toys have been endlessly updated to meet changing fashions.
