Housed in a charming former mill and warehouse by the River Trent, Newark Millgate Museum displays the working, social and domestic life of Newark, covering the 19th and 20th Centuries.

In addition there are temporary exhibitions showcasing the work of contemporary local artists and designers.

The museum is just 10 mintues walk from the town centre and Newark Castle.

Newark Millgate Museum is part of Newark and Sherwood Museum Service. In addition to the museum there is also the Gilstrap Heritage Centre to visit in the grounds of Newark Castle. The Gilstrap Centre is open daily throughout the year and admission is free.

The Service also operates the Resource Centre - the off site store and study room. Appointments are essential at the Resource Centre. Behind the scenes guided tours are available - contact Newark Millgate Museum for further details.

Discovery Boxes

Discovery boxes are available to borrow free of charge. The boxes provide opportunities for object handling. Each box contains real and replica objects and teacher/group leader support materials. Each box can be borrowed for up to 2 weeks free of charge.

Craft Sessions

Join in with craft sessions held weekly during school holidays. Each week takes a different theme and activity and are suitable for children aged 4-11 years.

Education Sessions

Our Education team offers free education sessions for schools and groups. Pre-booking essential.
Sessions include Life on the Home Front (World War II), Civil War Tours, The Romans, Victorian Laundry, Mystery Objects, Healthy Living and Medicine Through Time.
We can also offer craft sessions - mosaic making, masks, peg dolls, design-a-dinosaur, puppet making and spinning toys.
