Anglo-Saxons

http://www.derby.gov.uk

This lesson can be arranged in school or in the museum.
Throughout the year. Led by Janette Hopkins
I will dress four students, two as poor Anglo-Saxons and two as rich Anglo-Saxons, to enable the group to make comparisons. We will be investigating replica Anglo-Saxon objects and visiting the Museum Gallery, recording our findings, to help us piece together facts about life in Anglo-Saxon Britain.

Bits from the Blitz

http://www.derby.gov.uk/museums

This lesson can be arranged in school or in the museum.
Throughout the year. Led by Janette Hopkins
Meet Janette, the air-raid warden and experience the air-raid shelter. With the aid of sound effects, imagine what it was like during a bombing raid. How did evacuation and rationing affect the life of a child during WWII? Sift through and investigate the objects salvaged by the WI from a bombsite and learn more about life in this troubled time.
It is requested that children come dressed in simple WWII costume, as evacuees with their name tags, and if possible to make gas masks at school prior to the visit, to bring with them. This will enable their visit to be more of a complete experience.

The Railway comes to Derby

http://www.derby.gov.uk/museums

Available the first half of the Spring and the Summer terms. Led by David Parry.
A walk to study the development of Derby as an important railway centre in Victorian times. The area around the station has seen many changes but there are still reminders of Derby’s railway heritage, some now hidden from view. We shall also refer to other forms of transport, making this a good start to a transport project.

http://www.derby.gov.uk/museums

Available the first half of the Spring and the Summer terms. Led by David Parry.
A walk round the city centre looking at the way Derby was changed, by the coming of the railway, from a small market town to a thriving centre of industry, having to absorb a large working population.
