Aside from being a singing sculpture, artist Luke Jerram's wind pavilion, Aeolus, has the distinction of weighing ten tons and incorporating 20-metre long vibrating strings within a series of giant tubes. Now it's up for sale.

Having spent more than three years creating Aeolus, which was completed in 2011, Jerram has seen the giant – commissioned by the Universities of Southampton and Salford and backed by the Arts Council – tour to the Eden Project, Lyme Park and Canary Wharf.

“Visitor numbers were really high during the UK tour,” he says.

“We received a great deal of press coverage for this artwork. So I’m hoping there may be interest from people who’d like to own it.

“Rather than just selling it through a gallery to a museum or collector, I thought it would be good to open the opportunity up to everyone”.”

Aiming to bring it out of storage, Jerram has set a starting price of £1 for the stainless steel lot, which amplifies the sound of the wind through tubes humming their own deep tones.

He has pledged to spend any proceeds from the sale on “high profile” new public artworks.

“We are very pleased that the potential sale of the work will enable it to be experienced by a new audience,” says Phil Gibby, the Arts Council’s Director for the South West.

“This isn’t a money-making exercise. Any money that is made will benefit the development of Luke Jerram's artistic practice.

“It’s more about finding a new home for this amazing sculpture so that people can continue to enjoy it.”
