Anyone visiting Oriel Davies as part of a holiday in mid-Wales this summer might find themselves becoming part of a wry installation with an eye on history stretching all the way back to the pilgrims.

Monasteries could have been considered the earliest incarnation of the institution that is the bed and breakfast. And in this gallery reimagining of the humble hostelry – complete with a variety of instructions, from an order to discover the objects through non-tactile means to the more spiritual command to “look at yourself and your life differently" – the state of arguably the country’s most valuable industry, tourism, is being played out in dimly-lit style.

Any notions of tackiness can be dispelled through the involvement of more than 30 artists. Many of them have worked with B&B owners around Newtown, creating a shower screen with a hidden message, board games, blurred boundaries of privacy and even evidence of ghosts.

  • Open 10am-5pm (closed Sunday). Admission free. Follow the gallery on Twitter @OrielDavies.
