Exhibition Preview: Fiona MacDonald – Morphology, Maddox Arts, London, April 2 – May 2 2009

Fiona MacDonald is a painter capable of exquisite colour and intensity, but it’s her eye-catching ability to create pieces resembling living, breathing organisms which is most likely to catch the eye at first sight.

Table tops, ceramics and furniture are fashioned from branches and organic matter, turning her ceramics into quirkily-moulded sculpture.

It’s hard to imagine anything MacDonald couldn’t concoct something crafty with – mushrooms, blood cells, flowers and a shower puff all get used here, and glittery watercolours suggest foliage in the multi-coloured underworld formed.

The natural world becomes more magical and colourful through this style, driven by disciplined, intricate oil canvasses.
