Exhibition Preview: Hit, Swedish Ambassador’s Residence, London, until October 26 2012

Art fans might know a bit about Swedish contemporary practitioners, but the 18th century walls of the Embassy of Sweden’s London headquarters are a set of interiors rarely glimpsed by your average gallery visitor.

So when Carl Otto Werkelid, the Counsellor for Cultural Affairs at the Embassy, calls this show a chance to see art and architecture through “fresh eyes”, he’s actually talking about a novelty sneak-peak for anyone lucky enough to make one of two open days or book a visit to the limited capacity balcony space.

Visions of glittering chandeliers and chocolate-brandishing butlers aside, the display itself is a mixed media one starring Kent Karlsson – a sculptor aiming to pose a question or two to passers-by on their way to Frieze – and Emanuel Röhss, a vivid painter who’s responded in site-specific fashion to the swanky setting.

Both artists studied at the Valand School of Art in Gothenburg, a city known as Little London during its Anglo-Swedish trade escalation during the 19th century. And their cause, they say, is an “extrovert exploration” of modern times.
