Simon Boase - The Distinction Between Being up and Being Down at South Square Bradford

In a Grade II-listed space self-proclaimed as a “test bed for new ideas”, the concept of a corner of Bradford becoming part of the global dance scene certainly seems a novel one.

And it pales in originality to the furniture and curtains made by Leeds artist Simon Boase for this bombastic show of sound and imagery, inspired by YouTube clips of illegal house parties in Tehran, and soundtracked (sometimes live) by contributions from “international DJs” via Skype.

Boase has made a series of new works, Mixes Made in Cars Moving Over 95kph, in which he has produced music while rattling along at fair old velocities before exploiting the similarly speedy capabilities of the internet to upload them for the delectation of a global audience.

He augments his own efforts with footage of noughties techno festivals, 90s trance raves, 80s warehouse parties and mixes you can download and take home with you. The abiding mood, you suspect, will be very much up.
