Caro at Chatsworth devotes grounds of Duke of Devonshire's "Palace of Peaks" to sculpture

Derbyshire stately home Chatsworth House might invite a simple showcase of Anthony Caro’s spectacular sculptures, but this display – timed to coincide with an extensive overhaul of the 17th century façade of the “Palace of the Peaks” – actually comprises a retrospective of decades of work by the artist, slaloming around the Duke of Devonshire’s surrounding estate.

The first ever show devoted to an individual at Chatsworth, it features early examples of Caro’s steel works in blue, orange and green, numbers from his Flats series of Canada-conceived creations in rusted and varnish steel from the 1970s, and recent pieces reflecting his further experimentations in steel.

A monumental series of ziggurats, the Goodwood Steps, are responses to the architecture of Chatworth itself, positioned immediately in front of the vast south lawn and impressive Seahorse Fountain.
