Exhibition: Chien-Wei Chang: Don’t Look Back! I Told you So, New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, Leceister, until March 25 2012
In a new installation piece combining recycled glass bottles with hand crafted objects, artist and former jewellery designer Chien-Wei Chang takes a step back from his usual practice of metal work to explore his cultural heritage.
Having just received British citizenship yet native to Taiwan, Chien-Wei’s installation represents "the cellar" and looks at how it shares its role across different cultures as a space in which food is preserved in jars and bottles to sustain life in times of scarcity.
His work, which forms part of national crafts initiative The shape of things, also offers an insight into his personal journey as he explores his relationship with his cultural past.
Within the bottles and storage containers Chien-Wei has placed thoughts on his day-to-day life, using the cellar as a kind of a diary room or archive that acts to preserve his own experiences.
Open 10am-5pm (11am-5pm Sunday). Admission free
