It does not seem like only a year ago that Haroon Mirza picked up the 2011 Northern Art Prize. Major shows at Lisson Gallery, Camden Arts Centre and the collection of a Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale have all followed since. The Sheffield-based artist has made a lot of noise.
His current exhibition at Spike Island may be a reiteration of the one at CAC, but is a good way to begin the new year all the same. Bristolians can now hear as well as see or read about the artist’s work. After all, he describes himself as a composer.
Once immersed in this show, it is easy to see why. Mirza mixes found soundtracks from video art, installs a drumkit infront of some paintings and draws attention to some silence by placing a ring of light in an anechoic chamber
So don’t expect a picture to do justice to any of this work. And what is perhaps even more remarkable is that all of the pieces in /|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/| have been made in the last 12 months. At this rate Mirza will be having retrospectives by 2015, so do catch the thirtysomething artist while his star is rising.
