Exhibition: International Garden Photographer of the Year, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, until September 2010

The third year of the International Garden Photographer award attracted more than 20,000 scenic snaps from across the world. The winner – a psychedelically-illuminated private garden in Luxembourg which won Marianne Majerus £5,000 – heads a range of categories including Young Garden Photographer (won by 15-year-old Matthew Tauzer's shot of a Japanese garden in Oregon), Plant Portraits, Trees and The Edible Garden.

"This year the judges had an even more difficult job than usual," says organiser Philip Smith, who called the winning images "tremendously exciting".

"The judging process took more than two months. We reviewed thousands of inspiring and impressive entries received from around the world."

The UK's Rachel Warne won Best Portfolio for The Present Past, a collection of six mysterious images of glasshouses from the deserted kitchen at Pentille Castle in Cornwall, and former Royal Horticultural Society Photographer of the Year Jacky Parker – an RHS graduate apparently known as The Flower Lady – won the public vote in the Plant Portraits category.

Garden Views, Wildlife and People in the Garden, Wildflowers and 4 Seasons are the other themes for the set of more than 100 enlarged images, showcased in an outdoor gallery near Kew's Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Art.

Open 9.30am-6.30pm (7.30pm Saturday and Sunday). Admission £13.50/£11.50 (free for under-17s). See the competition winners online.
