Showcasing Leicester’s creative responses to one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, August Sander, this project between Leicester Arts and Museums and Leicester College is packed with pieces by photography students and the general public.

Earlier this year, New Walk hosted the ARTIST ROOMS: August Sanders exhibition, showing 175 of the photographer’s works.

The exhibition acted as a launch pad, inspiring a project to encourage Leicester photographers to create their own response to Sander’s distinctive portraits, exemplified by his series People of the 20th Century, which aimed to show a wide and unflinching cross-section of society.

In all, 319 works were submitted via Twitter (#sandergram), Facebook, Flickr and online. Contributors included local Leicester photographers as well as international submissions from Germany and Saudi Arabia.

Viewers have selected 75 portraits to be displayed in the exhibit alongside a further 75 from students at the college. All of the submitted entries can be seen online LeicPhotoGall, where the public are also invited to vote for their favourite featured works.
