a film still of a seascape

Film installation: John Smith, Horizon at Turner Contemporary Margate until June 17 2012.

The beautiful Margate seascape that once entranced JMW Turner and is now framed by the windows greeting thousands of visitors to Turner Contemporary will soon be flowing and crashing across the gallery’s walls.

Horizon is a newly commissioned video by John Smith that captures the sea from the gallery’s vast windows and locations around Margate.

Filmed over several months Smith tracked the sea in different seasons and in a variety of weather conditions and, like his forebear and gallery namesake who worked in oils, managed to skilfully capture the abstract qualities of light and the sense of movement in the ocean.

“The film he has created for us is very particular to Margate,” says Gallery Director Victoria Pomeroy. “It makes us consider the incredible seascape that drew JMW Turner to the town and continues to be a powerful inspiration for artists today.”
