Exhibition: David Barnes: King Tide, Ffotogallery, Penarth, until October 1 2011

Photographer David Barnes’s gritty human portraits and eye for colour have seen him feature regularly within the pages of glossy magazines in weekend broadsheets.

As part of Welsh lens media epicentre Ffotogallery’s Wish you were Here season showcasing local talent, King Tide combines photography, film and elements of installation in a gentle contemplation of time, with the stories told in each shot left intentionally open-ended and usually shrouded within imposing landscapes.

The metaphors and themes explored are intended to draw on memory and history, and the title references the alignment of the Earth, moon and sun and the sway their positions have on the sea.

This natural phenomenon, Barnes suggests, can go unnoticed in the same way powerful forces in life can slip under the radar if you’re not paying attention.

  • Open Tuesday-Saturday 11am-5pm. Admission free.
