Exhibition review – Norfolk Photographer of the Year finalists at Norwich Arts Centre until September 17 2008.
A new exhibition has opened at Norwich Arts Centre narrowing down the search for Norfolk’s Photographer of the Year to a talented 25.
Photography enthusiasts are flocking to view finalists’ mixed interpretations of the competition’s theme, ‘Little Things’, and to vote for the ‘People’s Prize’ winner.
“We have a wealth of creative talent in the county and we wanted to shout out about the fantastic artwork being produced, not just by professionals, but by everyday folk too,” said Stuart Hobday, Director of Norwich Arts Centre (NAC).
“It’s a great chance for artists to have their work exhibited and be in with the chance of winning their own exhibition here at NAC.”

Whether you are interested in Norfolk or in accomplished photography, the free exhibition is a treat to walk around with a range of imaginative and striking pieces. The exhibition is not confined to the gallery either – you can stop to view some of the photos in the comfort of the café/bar.
Many of the entrants have interpreted the competition’s theme symbolically. Young photographer Cameron Black’s innovative entry sees the white glow of a TV screen become an alien light in the darkness of a forest setting.
Cherry Styles uses ‘little things’ to usher forth a big message in her photo: ‘Save energy, boil less water’. Alex Atkinson brings action men to life. His use of lighting makes them seem, at first glance, like people in a real-life war zone.

More literal approaches include James Douglas Edred Cross’s ‘Spring Crocus’ in which a glittering yellow pollen stem becomes the flower of the piece. Also look out for imaginatively shot kettles, little bits of nature brought to life and baby ravers.
The Norfolk Photographer of the Year 2008 and ‘People’s Prize’ winners will be announced on Thursday August 28. A subsequent exhibition at NAC will showcase their work.
The exhibition is open until September 17, Monday to Saturday 10am - 7pm, excluding 18 – 22 August, when NAC will be closed for maintenance, and Bank Holidays.
