The exhibition, When You're a Boy: Men's Fashion Styled by Simon Foxton exhibition, Photographers' Gallery runs from July 17 - October 4 2009.

When You're a Boy is an exhibition celebrating the career of groundbreaking menswear stylist Simon Foxton. The past three decades, during which Foxton has risen to the forefront of men's styling, have been a time of profound change in fashion and style photography.

Foxton has anticipated and defined key shifts in men's fashion since the early 1980s and created some of the most memorable fashion photographs of the period by questioning the notions of masculinity, national identity and taste.

His pieces combine historic portrait iconography and classic English men's tailoring with contemporary sportswear design, street fashion and references to gay subcultures to produce sophisticated and innovative fashion images.

As well as exploring the complex and varied working practices of a fashion stylist, the exhibition will also showcase Foxton’s working partnerships with some of the top fashion photographers including Nick Knight, Jason Evans and Alistair McLellan.

Foxton graduated form Central St Martins in 1983 and initially worked as a fashion designer before moving on to style for i-D magazine in 1984.

His witty, often provocative and highly influential collaborations will be presented through a range of photographic prints, scrapbooks and image installations that will include his collaborations with Ben Dunbar-Brunton, Donald Christie and Simon Thisleton.

Foxton remains the quintessential menswear stylist who consistently progresses the field of men's fashion portraiture. His work is represented in collections at both the Victoria and Albert Museum and Tate.

The exhibition is curated by Penny Martin, Rootstein Hopkins Chair of Fashion Imagery at the London College of Fashion, and former Editor-in-Chief of online fashion and art project, Showstudio.com.
