Exhibition: Once – Still Images of Moving Pictures, Derby Museum and Art Gallery, Derby, until April 13 2009.
Format09, Derby’s Photography Festival of more than 200 snappers across a score of venues, has secured an impressive headliner with an exhibition of work by Wim Wenders.
Four weeks of displays, talks, workshops and events begin in the city on March 6 2009, but pictures by the cult German filmmaker, whose cinematic work includes Wings of Desire and Buena Vista Social Club, have already gone on display at Derby Museum and Art Gallery.

Once is a collection composed by Wenders during trips across the world while on location for his films, comprising snapshots of lonely, isolated individuals, graffiti-stained walls, Texan skylines and tiny communities.
“The broken buries itself deeper into memory than the whole,” says Wenders, describing the premise behind his idiosyncratic visions. “The broken has a kind of brittle surface which one's memory can grab hold to. On the clean surface of the whole, memory slips away."
