Exhibition Preview: Jordan Baseman - Dark is the Night, The Photographers’ Gallery, London, February 21 – April 5 2009

“I can describe what I do,” Jordan Baseman tells the Wimbledon College of Art he reads at.

“I make semi-documentary, narrative films. They are not factual, but hopefully they’re truthful. They’re heavily constructed and heavily edited, although they may not appear to be. They are a little bit like portraiture, for lack of a better way to put it.”

A highly respected video artist, Baseman loves documenting the eccentric, unusual or simply gritty. In Hygiene he followed cleanliness obsessives around, splicing in clips of Michael Jackson, and in Sunday Morning he considered poetic hopes and aspirations through amateur footballers.

Soho seems a veritable playground for this lover of the unpredictable interviewee, speaking to residents and constructive narratives.

The title piece centres on a transsexual prostitute describing her life, and Nasty Piece of Stuff, in which Alan Wakeman discusses the Gay Liberation Front and his first intimate sexual experiences, also features.
