Festival preview: Filmic, Watershed, Bristol, until May 9 2013

Acclaimed composer Philip Glass, Goldfrapp’s Will Gregory, a new collaboration from Portishead’s Geoff Barrow and a turn from PJ Harvey accomplice John Parish are among the highlights of this year’s annual muso-film line-up at Watershed, co-organised by St George’s, a Georgian church which has become an acoustically-singular venue in the city with a leftfield musical history to boast of.

Parish, who says he thought of his own music as filmic “long before I’d ever scored a movie”, will be discussing his up-coming Screenplay album before its live world premiere on Thursday (March 14).

Composer Glass closes the season with a chat alongside conductor Charles Hazlewood, as well as a solo piano performance which returns to his innovative Etudes of the mid-1990s at the church.

“We're trying to look beyond the usual film-scores and soundtracks-angle to present really interesting work from a variety of contexts,” says co-curator Phil Johnson.

“The range of music on offer - from Philip Glass to John Parish to Will Gregory and Drokk - is very rich and very different. That's the festival's strength."
