Richardson shares a taste for the hyper-real with her aforementioned peers, combining wildlife cinematography with sci-fi cinema and the Romantic landscape tradition to create panoramas from either the dawn of time or more likely its end.
One typical work here is The Erudition, which uses animation and digital distortion to paint a lunar landscape of ghostly trees. The press release describes it as a hallucination of a super computer. It seems one day that could be the only natural vista left to us.
Leviathan, Twilight Avenger and The Great Destroyer also present the visitor with immersive forest scenes. Compare them with Towner’s recent installation by Olafur Eliasson, in which you really could lose yourself amongst the branches of a forest.
Legion arrives in East Sussex after spells in Blackpool and Sunderland. It travels onto Vancouver. While her international reputation continues to grow, this brief UK tour will have done the Canadian artist no harm in her adopted home.
- Open 10am-5pm (closed Monday). Admission free. Open 10am-5pm Tuesday to Sunday. Follow the gallery on Twitter @Townergallery.
