Brighton Photo Biennial 2010: Snapshot - A Portrait of Brighton shows new side of city

Exhibition: Snapshot: A Portrait of Brighton, Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, Brighton, October 2 – November 14 2010

In the major Biennial show at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, curator Martin Parr asks three artists to capture the area. Stephen Gill experimented with "bits" of the city – seaweed, jellybeans and fish tails – Rinko Kawauchi captured the flocking starlings at the Pier, and Alec Soth merged local newspaper headlines into documentary-style photos, seen through the eyes of his daughter.

Inspired by Parr's project, photographer Annis Joslin together with university students and school pupils have decided to encapsulate their own vision of Brighton in honour of the Photo Biennial 2010.

The results are on show at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, complementing the main trio of artists, and pupils will also find their work on postcard stands and as a billboard at the city's Astoria Bingo Hall.

Annis and photography undergraduates from the University of Brighton held a workshop with the pupils from Longhill High School, Hillcrest School in Hastings, Bexhill High School and Rye College to collaborate on the project.

Collectively they took to the streets with cameras to mirror the work of Gill, Kawauchi and Soth, before playing back and editing their work in the classroom.

The project was funded by Aimhigher and Widening Participation, an organisation encouraging under-represented young people into higher education.

"It was great for the undergraduates to use their professional skills, while the pupils developed artistically and had an insight into what it’s like to be a university student," says Juliette Buss, the Education Co-ordinator for the Biennial.

"We're really grateful for this fantastic artist-led opportunity. The school pupils, supported by Annis and art students from the University of Brighton, have made a series of really strong images of Brighton."
