Brighton Photo Biennial 2010: Artists take over the city for omnipresent Brighton Photo Fringe

Running in partnership with the city's Photo Biennial, the Brighton Photo Fringe returns this weekend having expanded significantly on its 2008 roster – where 82 exhibitions took place two years ago, more than 130 are on the programme this year, involving more than 400 artists.

Stuart Griffiths' Closer, a set of photographs exploring war and conflict from the former soldier who patrolled West Belfast in the late 1980s, was selected by Martin Parr as the winner of the Open 2010 competition to become the "keynote" exhibition of the pack, launching the opening Fringe Saturday at the Phoenix.

Over at The Old Co-op Building, a ghostly disused supermarket on the arterial London Road, Nothing is the Place sees the likes of Wolfgang Tillmans and Parr himself star among more than 25 artists in a survey of life in Britain during the 1990s, allowing curator Jason Evans to occasionally make entirely new versions of their work along the way.

The space also hosts Uprooting the Gaze, a set of works exploring locations and travel by five African artists including African Photography Biennial award nominee Uche Okpa-Iroha and Breeze Yoko, a star of the Biennale of Contemporary African Art in 2008.

In the North Laine, at Crane Kalman, menacing work by Michael Ormerod gives the British observer of the soured American dream a rare and overdue outing with States of America, some of the last photographs he released before his premature death in 1991.

Hidden cavern the Grey Area has secured work by former Guardian picture editor Eamonn McCabe among ten artists responding to an eerie theme of silent interiors and connotations of absence, and Live in Translation gives audiences the chance to appear on billboards around the city in a project devised by Tatsumi Orimoto.

The Brighton Photo Fringe Hastings also runs 16 shows around the East Sussex town, taking to the Electric Palace Cinema, the Hastings Art Forum gallery, shop windows and even local bus stops.
