Artangel are offering sketch classes with a difference (above)

After years of cutting-edge contemporary art programmes, ranging from full-scale riots to ghostly houses filled with sinister people, Artangel's latest artistic venture might seem prosaic by comparison, until you look closer...

Life Class is an innovative series of drop-in life drawing classes offering the public the chance to have a go at sketching, free of charge, under the watchful gaze of a series of luminaries including John Berger, Maggi Hambling and Gary Hume.

It continues Alan Kane's often irreverent attempts at popularising the production and dissemination of art and culture by taking the life class model out of the privacy of the studio and into the nation's living rooms on daytime TV.

From June 22, in advance of a series of Channel 4 broadcasts, his drop-in life drawing classes will be making temporary appearances in London and four other cities across the UK.

The drop-in classes take place in London from June 22 to July 3 at Shoreditch Town Hall, East London; The House of St Barnabas in Soho; London Graphic Centre, Covent Garden; The Place, in Bloomsbury; and at the Channel 4 Offices in Westminster.

Classes in Glasgow, Bristol, Manchester and Southampton take place between June 24 and July 4.
