Exhibition: John Coatsworth: Painting the Toon, Discovery Museum, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, until January 15 2012

This exhibition at the Discovery Museum sees John Coatsworth demonstrate his love for painting the Toon red, white, blue and black, portraying the vibrant street scenes, bridges and stadiums of his native city.

After years of painting in a more traditional method, Coatsworth developed his distinctive style after experimenting with a mix of fine art and graphic design.

His ‘bendy’ style has created some of the most instantly recognisable images of Tyneside during the past 12 years.

The artist has been commissioned in the past to paint for Kylie Minogue, Girls Aloud, Coldplay, Meatloaf and Pink, amongst others.

The artwork on display depicts Coatsworth’s prolific career as a popular local artist, with prints ranging from the River Tyne, Grainger Market to St James’ Park and the Bigg Market.

It is Coatsworth’s first solo exhibition to be held in Newcastle city centre and will also feature some early works, as well as several never-before-seen paintings.

Visitors will also have the chance to buy many of the artworks on display.

  • Open 10am-5pm (2pm-5pm Sunday). Admission free.
