Exhibition: Paintings by Nicola McCartney, Riverside Studios, London, until June 30 2011

A bit of a homecoming for Nicola McCartney – the West London artist has a studio not far from the cutting-edge Riverside Studios, and this is her first show after returning from a residency in Jordan.

It sees her work develop from themes of the female image and the depiction of women in the media, most visible in her work Susan, of Britain’s Got Talent star Susan Boyle, to exploring representational relationships between women and animals, often using fairytales and the theme of “heroines” as a conduit for this.

The Slade School of Art Graduate’s work is full of colour and provides a vibrant and thought-provoking display.

Riverside isn’t predominantly known for its exhibition space, instead regarded as a theatre, cinema and television studios most famous for playing host to Top of the Pops and TFI Friday.

However, this tucked-away venue has a lively revolving art programme, displaying sculpture at the front of the building and mounted works in the art space.

The gallery has a lively history and reputation for showcasing the experimental, making it the perfect setting for McCartney’s work. Well worth a look if you get the chance.
