Johan van Mullem, Sans Titre (2011). Ink on board© Johan van Mullem
Johan van Mullem has had something of a late emergence as an artist: originally trained as an architect, the Belgian has only fully pursued his traditional form of portraiture during the past few years, but it’s gained column inches for its rich colours and certain sense of psyche beyond the mere physical features of those portraits.
Perhaps van Mullem’s supremely nomadic existence has something to do with his eclecticism and desire to reflect his own memories and reminiscences.
Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he moved to Tunisia at an early age and has lived in Bruges, Brussels and Stockholm. Painting, he says, has been a refuge and a place of introspection.
