Dean began drawing at a relatively late age, after a tutor spotted her eye for minutiae when she joined an art class after her children started school in 1985.

She went on to flourish during the renaissance of botanical art in the late 1980s, often studying seeds, flowers and fungi, and spent ten years tutoring at RHS Gardens Wisley.
