Exhibition Preview: Looking at Landscape: Pastoral to Present, Gallery Oldham, Oldham, until April 2013
Gallery Oldham’s eclectic collection, ranging from works by JMW Turner and members of Cornwall’s famous Newlyn School to local landscape interpreters and abstract painters of the mid-20th century, makes for an exhibition of favourites and rarities here.Five of them were pre-Christmas gifts from the Art Fund. The newest is a major ceramic by Ewen Henderson, bought with a Heritage Lottery Fund grant. The Lees Collection of watercolours – including numbers by John Robert Cozens and John Constable, bequeathed by the industrialist Charles Edward Lees – represent more longstanding acquisitions.
Of the newer artists, some place contemporary twists on the area’s pastoral painting past. David Blackburn contributes a monumental abstract pastel, land artist Andy Goldsworthy offers a sculpture, and Gayle Kwong Chang offers an “unusual” panoramic photographic landscape.
