Turner contemporary welcomes trio of mid century paintings from Arts Council Collection

Turner Contemporary boasts a seascape vista widely thought to be one of the finest in the UK. It’s tempting to think this outlook has influenced the selection of two of the latest arrivals at the Margate gallery.

A trio of mid-century British paintings have been borrowed from the Arts Council Collection as part of the gallery’s ongoing programme connecting contemporary and historical art.

Jeffery Camp’s (born 1923) panoramic Blue Sea (1959) is a perfect example of the artist’s preoccupation with the horizon seen across the waters off East Anglia, where he lived from the mid-1940s.

Similarly, Thelma Hulbert’s Rocks Under Water (1962-65) is thought to have been painted on the Cornish coast, where Hulbert spent some time.

They are joined by Ivon Hitchens’ (1893-1975), Garden Cove (1948-50) which is evocative of the light and colour of the English countryside – a recurring theme in his work.

The paintings are currently displayed alongside exhibitions by contemporary artists Alex Katz and Maria Nepomuceno. From February 2013, the paintings will hang alongside exhibitions by Carl Andre and Rosa Barba.
