This small Museums Sheffield exhibition concentrates on four of the city's most influential watercolour masters – JMW Turner, Thomas Girtin, Peter De Wint and John Sell Cotman, all of whom attended the School of Munro, an informal centre of excellence at the home of Dr Thomas Monro.
A physician, amateur artist, collector and art patron, Monro paid his talented visitors to copy watercolours from his collection. Turner and Girtin did so collaboratively, with Girtin drawing the outlines of works by John Robert Cozens and Turner filling them in with colour washes.
De Wint and Sell Cotman came from a slightly younger generation who learned from the expert brushwork of Girtin and Turner. The canvasses they left behind retain the power to similarly inspire 21st century practitioners.
- Open Wednesday–Friday 10am–3pm (11am-3pm Saturday). Admission free. Follow Museums Sheffield on Twitter @MuseumSheffield.
