The Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art has used an Art Fund scheme windfall to buy a pair of early works by American geometrical genius Ellsworth Kelly.

The two untitled abstract line drawings by Kelly, from 1957 and 1959, have come directly from his studio following negotiations between the Institute and the 86-year-old artist.

The Institute is one of five UK museums awarded £1 million by The Art Fund International campaign to help museums collect international contemporary art during the next five years. Kelly's pieces will go on show as part of an exhibition of his works opening next week (December 11).

"MIMA told us that they wanted to use the £1 million to create a world-class contemporary drawing collection in Middlesbrough," recalled Art Fund Director Andrew MacDonald.

"Since then they have bought some exceptional works by important and influential American artists, and built close relationships with the artists themselves, ensuring that despite some stiff competition from collectors and bigger institutions, they have snared the best works available."

Kelly said he was "delighted" with the deal, calling the works "important and revealing".

"MIMA is building a collection of international stature in the UK," he added.

"I'm proud that my drawings will form a key part of that collection."

Exhibition runs until February 21 2010. Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, Centre Square, Middlesbrough. Visit the Institute online or call 01642 726 720.
