The winners of the 2008 Jerwood Drawing Prize were revealed last night, September 16 2008, at the opening of the Prize’s annual exhibition at the Jerwood Space in London.

Warren Baldwin beat off competition from 54 highly regarded established artists as well as newcomers and art students to scoop the £6,000 first prize for his pencil and charcoal on paper drawing, Study for Portrait.

A second prize of £3,000 went to Lia Anna Hennig for her ink on paper drawing When I’m Sea Queen surely I will need a Sea King whilst two student awards of £1,000 each went to Tobias Teschner and Aline von der Assen.

Since its inception in 1994 the Jerwood Drawing Prize has been steadily promoting and rewarding excellence and talent in contemporary drawing practice whilst providing a forum for debate and a high profile touring exhibition.

"Over the last few years, drawing has been attracting more and more practitioners, audiences and critical interest,” said Roanne Dods, Director of the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.

“A combination of activities around the country have been contributing to this renaissance, and I am very proud of the part that the Jerwood Drawing Prize has had in this."

The exhibition will be held at the Jerwood Space, London SE1 from September 17 to October 26 2008. It will then tour to galleries in Cheltenham, Winchester and Bury St Edmunds.

The selection panel for the exhibition and winners consisted of Tony Bevan, artist; Emma Dexter, director of exhibitions at Timothy Taylor Gallery, London & editor of Vitamin D (Phaidon); and John McDonald, art critic of the Sydney Morning Herald, Australia.
