Exhibition Preview: Ten Drawings by Leonardo da Vinci from the Royal Collection, Ferens Art Gallery, Hull, until January 20 2013

In the Mona Lisa he may have created the most famous portrait in the world, but Leonardo da Vinci is now just as well known for his skills beyond painting.

Sculpture, architecture, engineering, botany, map-making and anatomy are among his talents symbolised in this display of ten drawings, which has enticed hefty visitor numbers to the Ferens for an exhibition loaned by the Royal Library at Windsor Castle.

“It is an honour that we are the only venue in the north of England to show these drawings,” says Terence Geraghty, of Hull City Council.

“The Ferens is now recognised as one of the best facilities in Yorkshire, and this exhibition’s resounding success, with visitors coming from far and wide, has raised Hull’s profile as a place to visit for culture.

“This is most definitely a major highlight of Hull’s cultural calendar.”

The 20,000 visitors in the opening three weeks have seen investigations made in pen and ink, red and black chalks and metapoint.

They are accompanied by the Artist Rooms show of Andy Warhol works and a series of volunteer-organised talks.
